Small Business Saturday is on Sat 3rd December 2016. Of course that is a very important day for small businesses, but do not forget to support them all year round! For more information on Small Business Saturday, please visit http://www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com/
We are excited and honoured to announce that your community magazine has been nominated in two different categories in the Business & Community Awards (BACAs), 2016. Organised by Didcot First, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the area in and around the town and the district as a positive place to live, work and invest, the Business & Community Awards is a prestigious reward and the largest event by Didcot First that celebrates all the good practice and community spirit in our local area.
This is a tremendous honour for us. We can't wait for the awards later on in the year. Nominations are made by residents / other local business / organisations, so it’s a really nice to know that we are providing a worthwhile services to residents and local business alike in serving our local community.
The BACAs recognise and reward excellence amongst local businesses, community groups and young enterprise. They are open to organisations, businesses, charity, community groups and young people, in and around the Didcot area within the OX11 area including Culham Science Park, Harwell Campus, Milton Park, Southmead Industrial Estate and all the surrounding villages.
I woke up this morning and checked my mailbox. Ok - not straight away. It was after a very strong cup of coffee. I cannot function before that.
What I saw was an e-mail from the National Association of Independent Publishers telling us that I had been nominated in several categories and shortlisted as a finalist in the 'Inspirational magazine business owner' category. Apparently, this year there has been a huge increase in nominations (up 64%) so the boffins at the association tell us we should be really proud..
And of course, we are.
But, without our readers and you, the local businesses and our advertisers, the backbone of our local economy, we would have no service to provide to our readers and, quite simply, no magazines to produce, print and distribute.
So thank you. Whether you are an existing, previous or future advertiser or whether you have simply enquired about advertising. Thank you for supporting us and thank you for using your local business directory.
Like them or not, the cooling towers of Didcot A have been the 'visual' symbol of Didcot for over 40 years. Not many towns (and some cities!) our size can claim to have a striking and widely recognised visual symbol as the Didcot Towers.
But three of them have already gone and the rest are scheduled to go early next year with the completion of the demolition by late 2016.
Once the towers have gone, they've gone. For good.
So, what should be the next visual symbol of Didcot? The Railway Centre? The Station? The Orchard Centre? The Cornerstone? Or maybe something else, maybe our wonderful countryside. Or perhaps something completely new, something that is not even there yet?
What do you think? Let us know here or on our Facebook Page. I look forward to your comments. Mike

This December Mike is taking part in the Decembeard to help raise money for Beating Bowel Cancer and he'd really appreciate your support.
Bowel cancer is the UK's second biggest cause of cancer deaths. Of the 100 people diagnosed every day, almost half will die. Yet, in over 90% of cases, bowel cancer can be successfully treated if diagnosed early enough. That is why it is so important to donate and help so that people know how to be aware of the symptoms and act on them and so that research can continue.
Donating to Mike's JustGiving page is easy - just follow this link and click Donate:
JustGiving sends your donation straight to Beating Bowel Cancer so it’s a quick and safe way to donate.
Wow. We thought getting nominated was brilliant enough but our excitement has been turned up a notch as we have just heard that your local business directory has been shortlisted for the awards!
(We're now busy dusting off frocks and dinner jackets for the ceremony...).
Wow. That was a new feeling. And a great one at that. Never having nominated before, I did not know the feeling but it sure was a great one yesterday when we heard we got two nominations for the upcoming awards at the national Independent Magazine Publishers Ceremony and Awards. Best New Magazine and Inspirational Business Owner..... The guys have not stopped taking the mickey since yesterday, bringing me fake acceptance speeches or impromptu crying scenes and calls of 'Thanks mum, thanks dad, thanks everyone that knows me...'
